The Modern Hypocrites Minute Track 6: Fountains of Wayne – Sink To The Bottom - I want to use this series of live recordings to spotlight songs that inspired me to learn guitar and write songs. The sixth song I want to spotlight is Sink To The Bottom. In the words of Adam Schlesinger, “Fountains of Wayne is a store in New Jersey and uh they sell fountains in Wayne. They have very reasonable prices and a large selection.” In the words of is band mate and co-writer Chris Collingwood, "Basically, we started all this by writing a bunch of titles on bar napkins and trying to get the other guy to laugh. We'd get drunk and just sit there writing and laughing. We wound up with a list of hundreds of titles. Then we'd decide between the two of us who was going to take which song, and then meet the next night and see what we'd come up with." I found this record my Junior year of High School and it changed my life. It gave me the courage I needed to write weird songs that were catchy. The music the Fountains of Wayne wrote made the mundane trappings of everyday life 3 minute power pop masterpieces. Most people probably know Adam and The Fountains of Wayne from their 2003 smash hit “Stacey’s Mom” but most people probably don’t know they knew Adam’s work from the song “That Thing You Do!” written for the movie. His accomplishments are too numerous to list, but please go look them up! Sadly on April 1, 2020, Schlesinger died of COVID-19 complications; he was 52. His death hit me very hard. As a 40 year old man who has suffered the passing of my Father at only age 7 I am not usually shaken by celebrity deaths, but the passing of Adam still hurts me in the deepest part of my soul. It took all my strength not to choke up and cry singing this song, but I wanted to celebrate Adam’s life and music with a smile so I did my best to honor him with one of his songs.
All songs were recorded with a 1st Take is the Best Take Punk Rock Philosophy.
