The Modern Hypocrites Minute Track 9: R.E.M. - Man on the Moon - I want to use this series of live recordings to spotlight songs that inspired me to learn guitar and write songs. The ninth song I want to spotlight is Man on the Moon. I think R.E.M. should always be mentioned when arguing about who is the greatest American band of all-time. This song has everything. The lyrics are beautiful poetry. The bass line is a melodic ear worm. The jangle of a Rickenbacker guitar through a Vox amp makes everything shimmer. The drums hit perfectly to propel the pre-chorus into the chorus. I still think of all the times after long hours of Modern Hypocrites band practice Dusty and I would always annoy Megg and Chicchi by performing this song in its entirety despite the death stare and sheer look of boredom we would get from them respectively. Michael Stipe perfectly captures the enigma that was Andy Kaufman. The lyrics are weird and uncomfortable, but also as catchy as a nursery rhyme. Something about that combination to me perfectly sums up the performances of Andy Kaufman. RIP to Andy Kaufman The World’s 1st Intergender Wrestling Champion… unless you actually faked your own death and got away with it.
