The Modern Hypocrites MinuteTrack 10: Teenage Fanclub – Mad Dog 20/20 - I want to use this series of live recordings to spotlight songs that inspired me to learn guitar and write songs. The tenth song I want to spotlight is Mad Dog 20/20. If there was a band that was everything I ever wanted to be its Teenage Fanclub. They sound like The Beach Boys and The Byrds but if the rhythm guitarist all used fuzz pedals underneath the jangle pop and sunny harmonies. I had been a fan of the band since about 1991 when the album Bandwagonesque came out, but I really fell in love with their song on DGC Rarities Vol. 1. Gerard Love said the song is about, “being a teenager in Bellshill, Scotland”, but who amongst us hasn’t nearly died in a field as a teenager from alcohol poisoning thanks to Mogen David 20/20 aka Mad Dog 20/20. Yes, it’s real name is Mogen David. Look it up. The song was supposedly excluded from the album “Thirteen” because it violated the “Scottish Good Lyric Act of 1973” which if untrue I never want to find out about, because the story is too good to be invalidated. Please do yourself a favor and listen to this quirky little jangle pop masterpiece and every album Teenage Fanclub released in the 90s!
