The Modern Hypocrites Minute Track 7: Poison - Every Rose Has Its Thorn - I want to use this series of live recordings to spotlight songs that inspired me to learn guitar and write songs. The seventh song I want to spotlight is Every Rose Has Its Thorn. If you’ve follow this series you know my musical journey started off with my Mom and Aunt Mimi’s Elvis and Beatles 45s, but when I got to purchase my own records I took a strange path. It was the 80’s and I fell for two new genres growing HIP HOP and HAIR METAL. In 1988 I purchase my first record “He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper” by Phillly’s own DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. A few months later I bought my first Hair Metal record “Open Up And Say… Ahh!” I was totally obsessed with Glam Metal. I remember getting Poison and Def Leppard t-shirts for birthdays and Christmas and lots of other albums. I know a lot of people now like to look back and make fun of that time period, but I loved how big the songs, videos, stage shows, sound, and hair was in the 80’s! I also loved the one thing every album of that time period was required to have.. a POWER BALLAD. To me Every Rose Has It’s Thorn is a perfect power ballad and as a songwriter I always appreciate the story telling lyrics, the epic bridge and C.C. Deville’s face melting guitar solo. I hope that you enjoy my take on this classic 80’s power ballad!
